Agency Description

The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs (AFOP) has been an advocate for migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States since 1971. The thread that binds the Association is the concept that training and education can provide the launching pad to a better and more stable life for farmworkers through the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP). AFOP has 52 member agencies that operate the program through competitive grants awarded by the United States Department of Labor. Members serve agricultural workers in 49 states and Puerto Rico—only Alaska has no program. NFJP is the most successful job training program operated by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). It is a fiscally responsible program aimed at educating and training farmworkers into jobs that allow them to earn an income to sustain themselves and their families. In addition, AFOP operates another national program in over 20 states through our Health & Safety Programs' National Farmworker Training Program (NFTP). AFOP certifies its 250 trainers in: - Worker Protection Standard (WPS) - Heat Stress Prevention Training - Tractor Safety Training - Take-Home Pesticide Exposure - Pesticide Exposure and Pregnancy - Pesticide Safety training for farmworker children. AFOP also runs the Children in the Fields Campaign (CIFC) that advocates for farmworker children rights focused on these areas: - Education/Prevention - through pesticide safety training for fw children - Awareness & Advocacy - through the Child Labor Coalition - Expression - through Essay and Art Contests Children In the Fields Campaign’s mission is to show America the realities our farmworker families face through the eyes of their children and to spur action to provide better educational support for our farmworker children, and prevent health hazzards from working in the fields.
